HANDMADE PRESENT BOX
RATATOUILLE THEMED
The Ratatouille themed box is an exploration of what present boxes can be. It was created to be taken apart so the recipient feels special without the need to physically keep the item that made them feel that way. They also have the choice between opening the gift or keeping the box itself. It also gives Kelsey Connolly an avenue to explore different ways of creating physical items.
FINAL BOX rotation
Step 1: Rough sketches
First, start with rough sketches combining different recognizable elements of the story. Also, explore ways of creating the box itself that leans creates a unique experience.
STep 2: Cleaned up sketch
Second, finalize the idea through a cleaned up sketch that will be referred to during the creation process.
step 3: build the box
Third, create the structure of the box that will make all visual elements possible while being durable enough to remain intact until the recipient opens it.
step 4: Wrap the box
Fourth, wrap the gift.
step 5: PAINT the BOX
Start by painting the box with guesso to prime it. Then, add story iconography using acrylic paint.
step 6: PAPER visuals
Then, make additional assets using vellum and card stock. In this case, card stock is used to add color and block the light.
step 7: ADD the LIGHT
Test and add the light to the center of the box. The battery needs to be accessible so it will be outside of the internal cavity and covered in the next step.
step 8: Cover the Battery
Create the cover of the battery using Alfredo Linguini’s hair. The hair was created by bending card stock using water and a hair dryer. The card stock was painted and taped to the cavity and hung over the battery.
step 9: final touches
Connect the wires to the battery and clean up any unclean paint edges.
